Today's Earthquake Warning: Earthquake shakes through part of Midlands away from where most tremors have hit

Today's Earthquake Warning

Over the past 24 hours there were multiple warnings for threats of severe weather above the surface of the Columbia area, but there was no expectation that another earthquake would hit the Midlands.

But that’s what happened, as a 1.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday morning, according to the U.S. Geographical Survey.

The earthquake was confirmed at 6:33 a.m. near Winnsboro, which is in Fairfield County, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division said. That’s about 20 miles west of where a flurry of seismic activity has been recorded over the past two years.

Monday’s earthquake happened at about 2.8 miles beneath the surface, according to the USGS.
